The importance of cooperatives featured on the Guardian website

As the Labour Party announced that it will support and encourage the cooperative movement at the next general election in the UK, an article in the guardian.co.uk explains how the history of cooperatives hit social progress in Britain and which is described as “the emergence of an unprecedented force for social change through worker ownership and control, but also the extent to which capitalist society in Britain felt challenged by such a movement”.
“If Labour honours its pledge to support the cooperative movement”, says the author, “the resulting social change could be significant”. Two examples of cooperatives are showcased in the article, and namely, the Leeds Co-op and the SUMA wholefood cooperativ.
