At this occasion, CICOPA organized a successful conference on cooperatives and development (click here to read more about The Way Forward) and also held its Executive Committee meeting and General Assembly.
History was made for the organisation representing cooperatives in industry and services in the world as a new regional organisation was born in Cancun: The CICOPA Americas was officially created.
It will strengthen the relationships between national organisations affiliated to CICOPA in this region of the world, including Paraguay, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, the USA and Canada.
CICOPA Americas had already been active in the past but disappeared after being disbanded in October 2007. The newly created organisation adopted its statutes and elected Arildo Mota Lopez (Brazil, Unisol) as President. At the same time he has taken up his new role as CICOPA Vice-president for the Americas.
This is the second regional organisation which has officially been created as part of CICOPA, after CECOP-CICOPA Europe.
CICOPA Americas is already composed of 2 sub-regional organisations, which were created in October: CICOPA Mercosur and CICOPA North Americas
